In this post I suggest that comparisons can be drawn between the historical suppression of women's writing and discourses on fanfiction in the mainstream media. I talk about fan writing as a feminist practice and advocate that in an age of increased consumerism, it is more important than ever that fanfiction remain free. By remaining not for profit, fanfiction can continue to reclaim and queer popular narratives, subvert the mainstream and keep fandom a safe space for fans and creators.
